The reputation of the United States being the world’s refuge, any migrant from any background having equal opportunity has cracked and the facade of the American dream is exposed.
In 2015, Donald Trump entered the race for presidency, largely mocked and famously promoted by the Clinton campaign because they viewed him as an easy competitor and a landslide win. Over a decade later he is a non consecutive two term serving president with an astonishing diverse voting population. The question is, how has this happened?
There are two parts to answer this question, there is an overall shift within the Republican Party and there is an American desire that manifests itself within Donald Trump for him to make something of himself. He has created himself in his own image and made himself into his own figure. Donald Trump is not a republican person and he never was he has no party loyalty and because of this is able to position himself as above and separate from it- using campaigning as a republican as a means to win due to the two parties system. His supporters view him as a separate entity.
He is someone who has gotten most of his voters from the population of people who didn’t vote at all previously, famously he was frowned upon by most republicans when he first announced his candidacy.
People began registering as republicans to vote for him. Additionally, for a republican candidate he has a record number of immigrant voters and black voters. As a result, the republican party began to slowly shift from being of right wing values to being Trump centered- you are right wing if you like him and anything else if you refuse support. This shift isn’t only being noticed within the Republican Party, due to this the Democratic Party now needs to campaign in opposition to him directly. Consequently centering him entirely in American politics.
As a result you have people like J.D. Vance, Marco Rubio, and Ted Cruz- all of whom power hungry- positioning themselves as though they are Trump’s successor. This didn’t work and this never would have worked because they were now viewed as fake opportunists politicians, the thing people voted for Trump as an escape from.
Donald Trump, partly supported by the stolen election narrative he spouts, breeds a distrust of institutions. He paints a picture for the American people that he is the sanctuary from government control that they have been looking for, and the American population is the perfect place to do it. These are people largely cut off from the rest of the world- American culture, American food, American slang, and American money has been broadcasted across the world; it’s the most famously and intimately known by a large number of nations. Additionally, the people are largely ill travelled- it’s difficult and expensive to travel to the other side of the world and because of the geography of it Americans become isolated which fosters this kind of thinking.
Donald Trump is performing to the perfect audience to build his empire, and his character is now seen as untouchable by evading criminal charges and over riding congress he is viewed as not only untouchable- but irreplaceable. Despite moving like a dictator himself, Americans hate the word “dictatorship” and overpowering governments. Americans are taxed and never see the results of their tax dollars directly benefit them building a distrust for the system. Donald Trump sees this and capitalizes himself by constantly mentioning and campaigning for the “little guy”. He talks about the coal miners in Pennsylvania, he says he will remove taxes on tips, and he centers their issues. When someone speaks about the economic hardships of your community it inclines them to be liked.
He’s a political outsider whos shifting the two party system to directly center him.
